Mom and I flew down to Los Angeles, California to join Peter where he was finishing up some projects at the beginning of February 2017. Looking forward to relief from the Toronto winter, we set off to spend 2 weeks in sunny California. Nature however had a different agenda - After weeks of drought, California got the relief it needed instead. Though 13 of our 15 days spent there were cloudy and rainy, it was hard not to take notice of the views and treats California had in store.
We took a road trip to San Francisco where we had a quick visit to Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge. It was nearly as cold as it was in Toronto so we were all glad to have our winter coats. When heading back down to L.A., we took the coastal Highway 1. A landslide that had occurred weeks before near Big Sur Park forced us to take a detour partway. Even still, we got to see much of the beautiful coast.
On another day, we enjoyed an early morning outing to San Diego, starting out at Little Italy Mercato Farmer's Market followed by a romp at the Dog Beach. This was probably one of my favorite places as there were many of my fellow four-legged friends to observe and play with. I did however get into a duel after one of them peed on mom's sweatshirt while she sat in the sand...There'll always be that 'one'. We then took in the sunset at La Jolla while mom and I shared a freshly squeezed green juice.
Malibu was probably the most surprising however. Dante (R.I.P) joined us in what was supposed to be a sunbathing-on-the-beach kind of afternoon. The winds didn't cooperate however and instead, we took a stroll along the beach. This moment being the most memorable as this would be where Peter would propose to mom. I remember her being really surprised and Peter being so nervous that he forgot what he wanted to say and barely remembered to get down on one knee. Dante and I did our best to act distracted as to not notice the awkwardness. They celebrated with a pint of Haagen-Dazs strawberry ice cream in the car ride back and haven't looked back since...well, maybe a glance in the rear-view from time to time.
